Emergency Warning - Met - Evacuate Immediately Extreme Skipton 30/08/2024
This Emergency Warning is being issued for Skipton. 
  • If you live, work or are holidaying in this area, you should Evacuate Immediately.
  • River level rises and minor flooding are occurring along the Mt Emu Creek at Skipton in response to heavy rainfall, with moderate flooding expected to develop from Tonight. Major flooding is possible from Tomorow morning
  • In the 24 hours to 1:00 pm Today, rainfall totals of up to 70 mm have been recorded in the Mt Emu Creek Catchment.
  •  Rainfall is continuing This afternoon but expected to ease during The evening.
  • Floodwaters are rapidly rising,flooding is expected to impact Skipton at 2:00pm.
If you are located in Skipton, it is recommended you evacuate immediately.
What you should do: 

Travel to a safe location. Options include: 
  • The relief centre that has been opened at Skipton CFA  54 Montgomery Street, Skipton and Football and Netball clubrooms at 15 Smythe Street, Skipton.
  • Family or friends’ homes located in a safe location, away from flooding. 

When you leave, remember to take your pets, mobile phone and medications. 

Floodwater is dangerous - never enter floodwater. 

If you are travelling by car: 
  • Do not drive through floodwater. 
  • Find alternative travel routes if roads or underpasses are flooded. 
  • Be aware of driving hazards, such as mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees. 
  • If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low lying areas and floodwater. 
If you stay: 
  • If you choose to stay, emergency services may not be able to help you. 
  • Stay inside and be aware of changing conditions. 
  • If floodwater comes inside, move to a higher point such as a kitchen bench or second story. 
  • Follow your emergency plan, if you have one. 
  • Contact family members and neighbours to ensure they are aware of the situation, if safe to do so. 
This warning is current to 6:00am. If you do not evacuate before this time, your property may be isolated or inundated with water and it may be too late to leave. 

You should stay informed by listening to emergency broadcasters and monitoring warnings.

Impacts in your area:
  • Flooding above floor level of a single-story home is likely to occur.
  • Floodwater overtops the road on both sides of the Glenelg Highway Bridge and additional properties are flooded. 
  •  Floodwater impacts 32 properties, with multiple properties on Montgomery Street flooded above-floor. 
  • Access is cut to Wright, Montgomery, Hardy and Cleveland Streets.
