Major Flood Warning is being issued for
Mt Emu Creek Skipton.
River level rises and minor flooding are occurring along the Mt Emu Creek at Skipton in response to heavy rainfall, with moderate flooding expected to develop from Tonight.
Major flooding may occur along the Mt Emu Creek to Skipton.
In the 24 hours to 1:00 pm Today, rainfall totals of up to 70 mm have been recorded in the Mt Emu Creek Catchment. Rainfall is continuing This afternoon but expected to ease during The evening.
The Mt Emu Creek at Skipton is currently at 2.26 metres and rising, with minor flooding. The Mt Emu Creek at Skipton is expected to exceed the moderate flood level (4.70 m) Tonight. The river level may reach the major flood level (5.80 m) tomorrow morning.
Skipton could be impacted anytime between 12:00am and 6:00am. If you are located in this area you are in danger - act now to protect yourself, and move to higher ground.
What you should do:
- Floodwater is dangerous - never enter floodwater.
- Decide if you will evacuate if it becomes necessary.
If you choose to leave:
- Remember to take your pets, mobile phone, spare clothes and medications.
- Travel to the home of family or friends who are in a safe location, away from flooding.
- Turn off gas and electricity at your home or workplace.
- Be aware of any road closures when you leave.
- A relief centre is open on the west side of Skipton at the CFA Station and the east side at the football/netball club.
If you are travelling:- Do not enter flooded areas. Turn around a find a safe alternative route.
- Be aware of road hazards including mud, debris and damaged roads or bridges.
- Floodwater is dangerous - never drive, walk or ride through floodwater.
If you stay or if it is unsafe to leave:
- Make sure you have enough food, drinking water, medications and pet food to survive for three to five days in case you become isolated.
- Use plugs, sandbags or household items to block toilets, sinks and drains to stop sewerage backflow.
- Move valuables and vital household items up on high surfaces, such as on top of tables, chairs, benches and beds.
Stay informed by listening to emergency broadcasters and monitoring warnings.
Emergency services may not be able to help you if you decide to stay. Impacts in your area:
- Flooding above floor level of
a single-story home will occur in many locations.
- Floodwater may impact up to 27 properties with 25 experiencing flooding above-floor level.
- Widespread flooding of the area.
- Access is anticipated to be cut to Smythe and Wright Streets, and part of the Glenelg Highway.
- Floodwater spills out from the eastern bank of Mt.Emu Creek, and spreads over Wright Street and Smythe Street.
- Flooding of the Smythe Street Bridge blocks access.
- The bridge on the Glenelg Highway will be closed.
