Watch and Act - Fire - Leave Now Moderate Christmas Hills, Knobs Junction, Mittons Bridge, St Andrews, Steels Creek, Kinglake, Smiths Gully, Yarra Glen Last Tuesday at 2:00 PM
This Watch & Act message is being issued for Christmas Hills, Kinglake, Knobs Junction, Mittons Bridge, Smiths Gully, St Andrews, Steels Creek, Yarra Glen.

  • There is a bushfire at Smiths Gully that is not yet under control.
  • The bushfire is travelling in a south-easterly direction towards Sugarloaf Reservoir. 
  • A wind change is expected at between 7pm and 9pm, which will cause the fire to change directions towards Yarra Glen and Dixons Creek. Conditions can become very dangerous and unpredictable.
Don't wait, leaving now is the safest option - conditions may change and get worse very quickly. Emergency Services may not be able to help you if you decide to stay.
What you should do:

  • Monitor changes to the situation. Increased wind speed, change in wind direction, smoke or poor visibility can indicate the situation is changing.
  • Protect yourself and your family.
  • If you are away from home, do not return.

If the situation changes or you feel unsafe you should leave:
  • Take your pets, medications, mobile phone and charger.
  • Many people have died trying to leave at the last minute during fires.
  • Travel to the home of family or friends that are away from the warning area or a Relief Centre or a Neighbourhood Safer Place.
  • A Relief Centre is located at Wesburn-Millgrove CFA Fire Station, 3060 Warburton Highway, Millgrove. 
  • A Relief Centre is located at the Civic Centre, 15 Anderson Street, Lilydale Campus, 397 Woods Point Road, East Warburton. 
  • Neighbourhood Safer Places are located at;
  • AF Walker Reserve
  • Collendina Reserve
  • Diamond Creek Community Centre
  • Diamond Hills Reserve
  • Eltham Car Park- Dudley St & Arthur St Eltham
  • Hurtsbridge Community Hub
  • Outdoor Performance Hub, Civil Circuit. Greensborough
  • Yarrambat Golf Club
  • Live Stock support services are available at Yarra Glenn Race Track
Emergency services may not be able to help you if you decide to stay. 
Impacts in your area: 
  • The following roads are closed: Smiths Gully Rd between Kangaroo Ground - St Andrews Rd and salters Rush Rd
  • Eltham - Yarra Glenn Rd between Ridge Rd and One Tree Hill Rd
  • Traffic management points at Calwell rd/Henly Rd and Skyline Rd/Wendy rd. 
  • Check the VicTraffic website (traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au/) or call 13 11 70 for road closures.
